He delivers superbly
Watching Bill Clinton tonight, I realize how much I wish he were still our president. Alas, he cannot be. Barack Obama can be. Change is ahead if we choose it. Please, choose change.

So much for “fair and balanced reporting”

“Here’s a clue: journalists don’t speculate. We gather facts and report.” - John Worthen - August 27th, 2008

Seriously, I realize this isn’t the actual newspaper … but, you do have a responsibility here.

I second that - is this the “Obama in ‘08″ blog? A turnoff for sure.

Folks, it is a blog. It is his opinion, not news. I don’t care for Clinton either, but I’m not calling the blogger’s journalistic credibility into question over it. His sanity maybe, but not his journalism.

On the blog, I express my opinions. My opinion about journalists not speculating holds true when I am practicing journalism. Blogs are a mix of reportage and opinion.
Blogs are not true journalism.
I expressed my opinion about journalism and about Clinton.
I would never, in a news article, discuss my opinions about Bill Clinton. While in college, I had to report on the impeachment proceedings and did so with the utmost accuracy.
Blogs are a hybrid world where even journalists can have an opinion.
And I plan on covering the GOP convention on this blog as well.

I thought the speech was good, too. Bill still has a lot of fire in him.

It looks like it’s hard for some to differentiate between the newspaper and the blog.
Those of you who are trying to mix the two together might want to think about how easy it is on THE BLOG for you to come and comment anonymously, as opposed to having to sign your real name in a letter to the editor for THE NEWSPAPER.
Here’s an easy way to think about it…
blog = oranges
newspaper = apples
get it?

Bill Clinton is the master of speeches. He showed everyone watching how it’s done. Love him or hate him, this is a fact.
I do wish he was the candidate instead of Obama.

I can’t believe all this hullaballoo over this post. Blogging is about opinions. So what if you don’t agree with them, say so. All this attacking reminds me of topix. Sheesh.

Hey, Sara - I do know the difference (I’m 71, I should). Have you never heard of the adjective “skewed” describing reporting? Some of us uneducated folks will forever read a writer’s “reporting” without thinking of his or her blog. No offense, but it’s truth and you know that, c’mon.
If I remember correctly, President Clinton said a couple of weeks ago that Mr. Obama’s presidency would be “a roll of the dice”.
Check it out - ’nuff said.
PS - Here’s an easier way to think about it:
blog = apples and oranges
newspaper=apples
Get it?
I tell you what, Ms Sara - you send your answer to the editor and I’ll send mine - not a problem.
Be sweet!

you missed it.
if you think this:
oranges and apples = blog, and also that
apples = newspaper,
then you are still mixing the two.
And if you are one of “those uneducated folks (who) will forever read a writer’s ‘reporting’ without thinking of his or her blog,” then this is your chance to educate yourself.
A blog is NOT the newspaper.
The newspaper is NOT the blog.
A does not equal B.
B does not equal A.
And as for Clinton’s supposed remark, what is your point?
I don’t need to send my “answer” to the editor because I know the difference between a blog and a newspaper.
And if I did send an “answer” like you suggest, just what was the question???
You be sweet too.

Sara - Admin says “Blogs are a mixture of reportage and opinion” - he pointed out the mix, I didn’t.
I didn’t have a point with the remark about Clinton - sorry, that was dumb.
This has been fun. Thanks.

Here’s the problem I (and several others, I think) have with such an opinion being seen on this blog:
The blog is linked from the newspaper site. That’s how I get here each time. I certainly understand the difference between the two (as I pointed out in an earlier comment).
That being said, though, it is in Mr. Worthen’s best interest that his readers not be so aware of where he stands on things like this. No matter how easily it is to take off the blogger’s hat and put on the journalist’s hat, your readers will now be looking for any hint of slanted reporting.
When you get down to it, though, it’s safe to say reporters in El Dorado, Ark., are a little far removed to actually be reporting on anything that happens in Washington or with our national leaders, etc. So… this problem will likely never come into play.
Here’s something Mr. Worthen probably didn’t even realize he said that immediately jumped out at me: “While in college, I had to report on the impeachment proceedings …”
Now, the words that hit me between the eyes was “HAD TO”… If you had been assigned a story on impeachment proceeding against a Republican, would it have been a chore or something you enjoyed, a feather in the cap? … at this point, you’re forcing us to wonder.
I enjoy the blog and will continue to read. As I said, I certainly understand the difference between the two. BUT … there is little to nothing to gain from a reporter stating opinions of this sort on a blog that is, apparently, supported and maintained by the newspaper.
