El Dorado emergency shelters open, filling fast

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

The South Arkansas Chapter of the American Red Cross last night began receiving nearly 200 evacuees from Louisiana. Two shelters within the city — at College Avenue Church of Christ and St. John Missionary Baptist Church — are already filling up, according to Shannon Robinson, director of volunteer services and public affairs for the SACARC.

That’s not counting the number of evacuees in the city’s hotels.

“It’s been very hectic,” said Robinson, who spoke to Between Editions via telephone today. “We have served lunch, and most people are trying to sleep now because they’ve been driving all night.”

Robinson said that Barkingham Acres has agreed to board pets.

Volunteers, please call (870) 918-2188 for more information.

S. Ark. to feel first effects of Gustav Monday

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

According to a bulletin from the National Weather Service, tornados, damaging wind gusts and flooding are all possible as the remnants of Gustav head our way.

Already, clouds from the far outer edges of the storm are visible in South Arkansas. Gustav is still a powerful category 3 storm, although the latest data shows the wind speed down slightly to 115 miles per hour.

NOLA mayor on Gustav: ‘You need to be scared’

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

According to media sources, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin told residents today at a press conference: “You need to be scared. You need to be concerned. You need to get your butt out of New Orleans. This is the storm of the century.”

Not exactly how I would have put it. I don’t think it’s the mayor’s place to tell people they need to be scared. None-the-less, this storm is shaping up to be very serious. Perhaps even worse than Katrina. Time will tell. Here’s the latest satellite imagery from the National Hurricane Center:

AND, the latest track has the storm coming ever closer to South Arkansas. Keep in mind that heavy rains and steady winds are a high possibility by mid-week.

Gustav grows to cat. 4, New Orleans evacuating

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour. Looks like we should brace for some severe weather early next week as the storm moves ashore and heads toward Texas.

Gustav now a cat. 3 storm

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

This is the latest satellite imagery of Gustav.

The storm has reached category 3 strength and will likely continue on its track toward Louisiana over the next couple of days. The newest track shows the storm crooking sharply to the northwest once it makes landfall, so that could put South Arkansas out of the danger zone as far as pounding winds and rains. It’s too early to tell.

Still, the forecast for El Dorado Tuesday and Wednesday calls for heavy rain.

Gustav strengthens into Hurricane

Friday, August 29th, 2008

As you can see from the above image, Gustav’s eye is now clearly visible. The storm has become an official hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters say Gustav will make landfall in Louisiana early Tuesday morning as a possible category 3 storm. A category 3 storm would batter the coast with winds between 111 and 130 miles per hour.

As Gustav churns northward, Gulf Coast residents are scrambling north as well. Hotel rooms are scarce in South Arkansas. As I reported here earlier, the desk clerk at the Holiday Inn Express in Camden said that the property does have rooms available this weekend and beginning on Wednesday.

The nearest available rooms for Monday through Wednesday are in Bryant, the clerk said.

If you know anyone who needs a room, try the Holiday Inn Express in Camden at (870) 836-8100.

The hotel clerk said that they have residents from Louisiana checking in today, and the rooms are going fast.

The best bet to find a hotel is to call around, as cancellations can happen.

The Camden News this afternoon is reporting that there are a few rooms available at the Super 8 hotel at 942 Adams Ave. They are going quickly, though.

The South Arkansas Chapter of the American Red Cross reports that shelters at College Avenue Church of Christ at at St. John’s Baptist Church on Wilson Street have been put on standby.

GUSTAV UPDATE

Friday, August 29th, 2008

New Orleans is evacuating its jail facilities ahead of soon-to-be Hurricane Gustav. Click here for more.

Meanwhile, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center are still saying that Gustav will head to Louisiana and cut to the north. If it does, South Arkansas will face a hefty pounding from this storm.

Forecasts call for Gustav to grow to a category 4 storm then diminish to category 3 just before landfall.

I’m working on a hotel availability piece for the blog. It should be ready at or just after noon today.

Stay tuned.

McCain picks Alaska Gov. Palin as VP

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The Associated Press reports:

DENVER (AP) — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate, two senior campaign officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

A formal announcement was expected within a few hours at a campaign rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, 44, is a self-styled hockey mom and political reformer who has been governor of her state less than two years.

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Barack Obama delivered a strong speech last night in Denver. He backed up his message of hope with ideas and plans for America’s future. The main talking points dealt with securing America’s middle class and ensuring that everyone in our nation has equal opportunity for basic things like healthcare.

Some still say he is too green to be president. We will see. All eyes now are on John McCain. Onward to St. Paul for the Republican convention.

McCain to announce VP pick today

Friday, August 29th, 2008

All sources point to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. The Associated Press reports that two GOP strategists close to the McCain campaign said all indications pointed to Palin, 44, a self-styled “hockey mom” and political reformer.

The strategists spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by the McCain camp to discuss the matter. There was no confirmation from McCain or his advisers.

Is this a tow line to Hillary supporters, who still would like to see a woman in or near the White House? Some say yes.

We’ll have the announcement as soon as it’s made.

No good news — Gustav plowing toward La. coast

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The New Orleans Times Picayune reports this morning that Gustav is still on a Louisiana track today, just a little further west of New Orleans than first predicted. The storm may grow to a category 4 just before landfall.

Here’s the latest track, according to the National Hurricane Center:

Wary of Gustav

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Gustav, shown here in a satellite photo, is churning south of Cuba.

Hotels in South Arkansas and northern Louisiana are completely booked today as nervous residents along the Gulf Coast are planning escape routes north.

Calls to area hotels confirmed that no rooms are available. The nearest available rooms, according to the desk clerk at the Econolodge on Junction City Road, are in Hot Springs and Little Rock.

Our local Red Cross unit has sent its emergency response unit to Baton Rouge.

More to come.

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

A Dallas County jury convicted Lavelle Evans, 30, of capital murder this afternoon in the retaliation killing of former El Dorado resident Crystal Jenkins, who was set to testify against him in a 2006 drug case, the Dallas Morning News reports.
