Dinner for eight on Fifth Street

I couldn’t help but share this New York Times piece today about residents in the Big Apple who are taking dinner to the streets.

They’re setting up tables on sidewalks and at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge. As you can imagine, the al fresco feasts gain a lot of attention from passersby.

I move that we start something like this in El Dorado. Perhaps I’ll have my birthday dinner in front of the courthouse. That would be fun, don’t you think?

Actually, I think that is a wonderful idea. It would be fun to sit on the courthouse lawn and chat with people as they walked by.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if folks brought their supper to the square every, oh, Tuesday let’s say, at 6:00 p.m. Bring a table, chairs, dinner and a cooler. It would be a cross between the old-timey dinner-on-the-ground and a modern day flash mob.

When the idea catches on and the crowds grow larger, local craftsmen will start setting up booths to sell their wares. Eventually a funnel cake dude will show up to sell dessert. Maybe a string quartet could play wearing shorts and flip-flops. Maybe a bluegrass group could do some pickin’ and grinnin’.

It would be a standing event every Tuesday evening as long as the weather is nice.

    Eldo Forward would *love* that.

I’ll be having a bucket of chicken at the foot of the viaduct .

    Bon Appétit !

I think this is an outstanding idea as well. El Dorado (and Union County as well) can be too “clique-ish” at times. Something like this could go a long ways towards bringing this town together, despite all our different opinions on the issues-du-jour. Let’s get the Boomtown Potluck going.
