Weekends rule

Friday, July 18th, 2008

I’m trying to gauge our weekend audience, so I can see if I need to do more posting on the weekends. If you check the blog on the weekend, please leave a comment. If there are readers, I will provide more content between Friday and Monday.

Calling all Carville fans

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Either love him or hate him: James Carville. For those who don’t know, Carville was Bill Clinton’s pit bull campaign manager. He now works in television, where he opines on various topics.

He’s speaking at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 at Southern Arkansas University’s Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center. Tickets are $100. They’ll feed you for an extra $100 and give you a chance to pose with Carville for a photo.

Heck, if anyone wants to give me $100 I’ll make them dinner and let them take a picture with me.

More information is available by calling SAU at (870) 235-4000.

Smog may blanket Olympics

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Beijing, the site of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, is one of the most polluted cities in the world. On any given day, a brown haze drowns out the skyline and sickens those with asthma and other respiratory diseases.

Naturally, the city is trying to clean up before hundreds of thousands of visitors converge there for the biggest sporting event in history (as it’s being touted).

Officials in China are mandating that factories close in the weeks leading up to the games in an effort to cut the smog. The government is also enforcing strict automotive laws: 3.3 million private vehicles on the roads of Beijing will be cut by 50 percent as cars with license plates ending in even numbers alternate every day with those with plates ending in odd numbers.

By the way, the Olympics begin on Aug. 8.
