Challenger…beast or burden?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I saw a new Challenger just like this one at the Wendy’s drive-thru the other day. Couldn’t help but also look down the street at the $3.99 gas sign and think, why would anyone buy this beast?

I know they are fast and cool and awesome machines — yes, they really are — but in today’s economy, how long do you think the fad of super muscle cars will last? It died in the mid-1970s and has been resurrected recently with cars like the Challenger and the forthcoming muscle Camaro from Chevrolet.

Bet you won’t see any driving around in Europe, where gas averages $6 or more. Won’t be long before we see that here.

Oh, and gas mileage for this baby is at 18 mpg on the highway and 13 in the city.

**UPDATE** Washington – U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) yesterday pledged her support to the workers of Anheuser-Busch’s rice mill in Jonesboro after the announcement that the nation’s largest brewer will be sold to Belgium’s InBev.

“My primary concern is how this deal will affect Arkansas’s workers,” Lincoln said. “While changes are sure to occur at the corporate level, I will work to ensure that employees and their families do not face harmful effects from this sale. For America to remain strong, it will be critical for our corporate citizens to follow through on their commitments to their workers.

“In addition, as a major buyer of Arkansas rice, Anheuser-Busch has played a critical role in our state’s economy. I will do my part to ensure that stability continues.”
